I got this a few weeks ago from the talented Mr Lurie, but was sworn to temporary secrecy on the event opening. If you're in the New York area I'd strongly urge you to check out John's show. More details can be found at John's website, strangeandbeautiful.com. Check it out and support people who don't suck!
First off, the interview with the lovely and talented Kari Wahlgren (see charming picture in the post just below...) should be showing up in the next few days. It will be greatly sweet. Oh yes.
And speaking of sweet, for some reason this little bit of cheese metal happiness made me grin, so, here's a little bit of video goodness for your consumption:
I know there's been a bit of Feature lull, but now I'm happy to announce the next guest here at Joe-Mammy.com is the lovely and talented Kari Wahlgren. You might not know her face (yet) but you've no doubt heard her work. For more (mostly true) information check out the nice folks at IMDB. In the meantime, sit in breathless wonderment and anticipation.
I saw Kari did this a few days ago and I've meant to swipe it (again), so here's the official Joe-Mammy iPod shuffle game
Photographic - Depeche Mode Recent acquisition. I hadn't heard much of D.M. before but I like what I've heard. Now if the lyrics weren't so damn silly: "I take pictures/photographic pictures" are you serious? Great synth sounds though.
Insane in the Membrane - Cypress Hill Ahh, nostalgic grooves from my younger days. I swear that drum line loop has been used a kajillion times since then, but it's still fun. Don't you know I'm loco?
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division Ian Curtis doing his melodic half moan over a bass line that would appear in New Order songs for decades to come. They just don't make angst like this anymore.
My Man - They Might Be Giants A song about a spinal injury. Only TMBG. The freaky thing about this song is that the words I incorrectly thought they were singing at points actually really left an impression, especially "the ghosts of an ocean" (actual lyrics "the coasts of an ocean") proving that it's not what you say, it's what some knucklehead thinks you may have said...
My Sympathies - AP2 The chorus "it's got nothing to do with me..." is good stuff. It's supposed to be an angry song, but it just sounds lonely, which isn't a bad thing, either.
and finally:
Dig - Adam Again Even over ten years after I first heard this song, it still kicks my ass. Funky, soulful, mournful and resolute all at the same time. Makes me wish Gene Eugene was still around so I could hear it live again sometime. That and it forever sold me on the sound of the Fender Rhodes. "There was a time that I might have surrendered, but not now" is one of the greatest culminations of a song I've ever heard.
Every now and then there comes along something stupid enough to be entertaining. Here's a nifty little entry "Kung-Fu Badass" which is still better than the last batch of Star Wars movies. My personal favorite is how the crafty Black Dragon escapes detection (in old-timey China) by hiding in the trailer house crapper. Ahhhh, bliss. I linked to part one, but the entire epic story is available if you've got the inclination...
