Another silly post
Ahhh, kickin' back. Had a frosty brew, watching some "Monty Python's Flying Circus" (the Lumberjack skit is going now. Beautiful.) Speaking of television, I don't watch the late-night talk shows, like, ever, but tonight I caught (for some freakish reason) Paris Hilton on Letterman. You know how some people can win you over in unscripted appearances more than in their actual films/shows/etc? Yeah, I officially hate Paris Hilton even more deeply. It's bad enough being a one-trick pony, but Paris is a no-trick pony. A no-trick pony that's been ridden many times... on video... that have been distributed online... so, I guess if we change the definition of "trick" to something more, shall we say, more "urban" she might qualify. And last night I had the poor fortune of running across Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" video. Why is that song listened to by anyone? It's not about anything. It's not good music. It sure as hell ain't good hip-hop. It's Gwen pimping her ass out to gawking teenage boys. Which would be novel if it weren't for every other female pop act doing the same damn thing. If you have shares in Western Civilization (specifically American varieties...) sell now, cuz baby, that stock is starting to look like it's about to crash. Oh look, "Mama's Family" is on. Nevermind the stock advice. This is 1932 in the culture market and "Mama's Family" would have been late '29. Where's our New Deal? Anyway, just a little dispatch to say "hey, how's it goin'?"

| 90's Alternative: High Influence | | 80's Alternative: Medium Influence | | Punk: Medium Influence | | 80's Pop: Low Influence | | Alternative Rock: Low Influence | | Classic Rock: Low Influence | | Dance: Low Influence | | Gangsta Rap: Low Influence | | Old School Hip Hop: Low Influence | | Progressive Rock: Low Influence |
A little of those cheesy on-line quizzes. Old School Hip-hop should be higher, but they ask nothing about Public Enemy. That and it's not scaled (huge Pink Floyd fan, for instance, more than say, Tears For Fears which apparently makes 80's alt rank higher or 80's pop rank at all) but it's a neat diversion. Check it out if you'd like. Well, I've managed to drag this on for nearly two hours of aimless internet rambling and wandering. So here's something I sent to Christophe der Soul Stealer. Two words: Darth Vapor. -Joe

I'm a loser baby...
As ol' Christophe der Soul Stealer pointed out to me, the Blog has suffered as of late. Part of it has been I've been stupid busy promoting All Things Right and Beautiful, finishing and doing various necessary paperwork aspects of lilies of the field and generally being sick. However, I do apologize for the general lack of update-ness occurring here. There is at least one Feature coming down the pipe (two if everyone is to be believed... and if not, you can look forward to an irritated Blog entry on that whole topic soon enough...) and hopefully some news of the big variety. Have faith, patience and, heck have another drink. In the meantime, just to prove I'm not completely full o' crap, here is the first semi-official review for All Things...I read it--I love it--it is quite funny, honest, true and yet refreshingly holy, with no holes, and everyone gets what they get, when they get it--deserved--even the ghosts get a kind of justice in a world gone mad, that looks like ours--the people are real as can be, and think too much like we all think, on our best and worst days--at the end we know enough, but not too much--not so much about a place or an idea--we know a bit about the human heart, mind and soul, about ourselves, and yet we don't know too much--just enough thought, just enough reality--just enough injustice and mayhem to be true--just enough almost hidden grace and justice and mercy to make life worth living and eternity, whatever that is, worth checking out--in the right frame of mind this book could send you to the Blues, to The Beatles, to a counselor, to Church and a conversion experience. If you don't laugh out loud there is no hope for your life and I pity your children if you have any.

Weekend summation
This is not the new video from lilies of the field (but, for what it's worth, there supposedly is one on the way...) but it does prominently feature the most fun word in the English language and it's terribly cheesy. Anyway, it's been a quiet weekend. Cards are on a tear and I got to see Kung Fu Hustle with THE CHAD and twas greatly sweet. Review is forthcoming (but probably not til midweek...) but it's a trip, man. It could very well be this decade's Rumble in the Bronx. As I've promised, there are changes and developments on the horizon, but, as always I'm gonna sit on it until things are more definite. I can say there are a couple Features in the works and some some very cool things as far as general goodness not to mention some potentially huge overall changes. But, I like to tease and say nothing more. I'm kinda a bastard that way. -Joe

Impromptu goodness
Well, it's been a helluva week. And with each passing week there appears to be both relief and menace on the horizon. How charming. Countdown is at 31 days (for what... well, you'll have to guess until then) Here's hoping my sanity can hold up. Needless to say there are things in the works that mean big changes. Keep yer fingers crossed. It was almost blue everywhere. I rolled over, more awake than I cared to be and the room was bathed in the murky greyish blue light. It was barely sun up. The colors would change within minutes and things would take on a more natural hue again. Somehow a return to "normalcy" actually seemed less comforting. Everything now was quiet and still like the tug-of-war between darkness and light had forced time to stand still until a victor was crowned for a new day.
Sarah let out a little sigh next to me. In the light her skin glowed with an incandescent shine. She still smelled of cigarette smoke, sweat and alcohol but I tried not to think about it. I glanced out the window and it appeared the daylight was slowly turning the tide of the battle. I looked back at Sarah, her shoulder blades seemed to rise and fall with her breath.
Regret is a horrible thing to feel in the morning--especially when it's following something so serene. If you could just capture an image and let it be what it was things would be a lot easier, but instead of being able to watch her sleep in the haze of early morning I started to put everything in context. How I had to hold her hair back again last night even after she said she was leaving. How many times she had swore she was leaving before passing out or vomiting.
Things were ending, it was clear. For all her bluster and clarity when she was drunk I knew it would end up being me who finally put an end to it all.
Maybe someday that moment will be able to live on its own like it did for those few bleary-eyed seconds. I guess that's what everyone hopes for: that eventually all that will be left will be a sense and an image. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. And you can't pick and choose as much as you want to.
I roll over as the light slowly washes away the blue into yellows and oranges as reality takes over again and time starts to move forward. I probably won't be able to get back to sleep now. I remember too much. I'm thinking too much. I think about getting up but just close my eyes and try to forget.

And the saddest thing about this is that it still exhibits more innate talent than any Paris Hilton has ever done. -Joe

A announcement of truly monumental proportions
lilies of the field is done. Here is the first video. No, seriously, I mean it this time... I know, I really need to stop doing that before you all hate me. In all seriousness the album is done, though and now it's just a matter of doing some paperwork and letting my good friends (who can actually, say, do design and such) get the artwork together. It also means I should have more time to devote to various writing projects. Whee! Also, now that baseball season has started, watch for more "commentary" (insert vague snickering) at the Birdhouse from yours truly. Cards all the way, baby. Keep it tuned, -Joe

Coughing and hacking my way to you
New "save" feature my ass. Blogger just totally (and completely) nuked my last post. To recap briefly 1) I'm tired and this will be brief 2) I've been busy 3) Opening Week (1-1) 4) lilies of the field is almost done 5) I've been sick. 6) Laugh at this. -Joe

Stick a fork in me... I'm done...
Sick. Phlegm and infection oozing out of orifices intended for other things. (Above the neck, so don't get too grossed out or anything...) Bright side: some finishing touches on vocals is all that's required for lilies of the field to be completed. If I can get healthy it'll be done in the next couple of days. In the meantime, here's a first look at the first video for the album. Okay, not really, but you gotta dig the dude on bongos, no? -Joe
